What Does IP44 Mean? Understanding the IP44 Rating for Lighting

When buying outdoor lighting, you’ll often see specifications such as IP44 rating. But what does IP44 mean, and why is it important when choosing safe and reliable fittings?

What Does IP44 Mean?

The IP44 rating is part of the Ingress Protection (IP) code, which measures how well a product resists dust and moisture. An IP rating always has two numbers:

  • The first digit shows protection against solids (like tools and wires).

  • The second digit shows protection against liquids (such as splashes or spray).

So, IP44 meaning is:

  • 4 (solids): Resistant to solid objects larger than 1mm.

  • 4 (liquids): Resistant to splashing water from any direction.

An IP44 light fitting is splash-proof and protected against small particles, but not fully dust-tight or suitable for heavy water exposure.

Is IP44 Waterproof?

A common question is whether IP44 lights are waterproof. The short answer is: no, IP44 is water-resistant, not fully waterproof.

IP44 fittings can handle splashes and light rain from any direction, making them suitable for sheltered outdoor areas. However, they are not designed for direct water jets, pressure washing, or immersion.

If you need lighting for fully exposed outdoor environments or harsher conditions, a higher rating such as IP65 or IP66 is the better choice. These ratings offer stronger protection against water, ensuring durability and safety where IP44 would not be enough.

Where Can You Use IP44 Lights?

Because of their splash resistance, IP44 rated lights are a popular choice for:

  • Outdoor lighting under porches, eaves, or sheltered walls

  • Garden and pathway lighting exposed to light rain or spray

  • Covered patios and semi-exposed commercial spaces

This makes the IP44 rating a versatile option for both domestic and commercial projects.

Where Is IP44 Not Enough?

While reliable, IP44 fittings are not designed for harsher conditions. They may not be suitable in areas exposed to:

  • Heavy rain or direct water jets

  • Pressure washing

  • Extremely dusty, coastal or industrial environments

In these cases, choosing a higher IP rating such as IP65 or IP66 will provide stronger protection and longer product lifespan.

IP44 vs. Higher IP Ratings

Comparing IP44 rating with higher ratings helps you choose the right level of protection:

  • IP44: Splash-proof, suitable for sheltered outdoor areas.
  • IP65: Dust-tight and resistant to low-pressure water jets — ideal for fully exposed outdoor use.

  • IP66: Extra protection against powerful water jets, often required in tougher environments.

FAQs

Where can you use IP44 rated lights?

IP44 lights are best used in sheltered or semi-exposed areas where there’s a risk of splashing water but not heavy exposure. Common examples include outdoor lighting under porches or eaves, pathway and garden lights exposed to light rain, and covered patios or entrances. Because IP44 fittings are splash-proof, they’re also suitable for certain bathroom zones. However, for fully exposed outdoor spaces or harsher conditions, a higher IP rating such as IP65 or IP66 is recommended.

Is IP44 suitable for bathrooms?

Yes, IP44 rated lights can be suitable in certain bathroom zones where fittings may be exposed to splashes, such as near sinks, baths, or showers. However, UK wiring regulations divide bathrooms into zones with specific IP requirements, so it’s important to check the exact location. While IP44 may be acceptable in Zones 1 and 2, always follow the official guidance for safety.

(Note: Vision Lighting primarily supplies outdoor and commercial lighting, but the same IP standards apply to bathrooms.)
