Understanding Rubber Cable Designations

Electrical cable designations provide useful information about the cable's construction, voltage rating and intended application.

For example, H05RR-F and H05BN4-F are harmonised European cable designations recognised throughout the UK and Europe.

  • H = Harmonised cable standard.
  • 05 = Rated voltage of 300/500V.
  • 07 = Rated voltage of 450/750V.
  • RR = Rubber insulation and rubber outer sheath.
  • RN = Rubber insulation with a heavy-duty neoprene or PCP outer sheath.
  • BN4 = Cross-linked elastomer insulation with a heavy-duty thermoset outer sheath.
  • F = Flexible stranded copper conductors.
